2010 National Merit Semifinalists & Commended Scholars

Eight St. Charles seniors qualified as National Merit Semifinalists for the 2009-2010 School year. They earned this prestigious distinction based on their scores on the PSAT-NMQT they took in their junior year at St. Charles.

Only 16,000 of 1.5 million students who took the test qualified. The qualifiers, including those from St. Charles, are in the running for scholarships that total more than $35 million.

The St. Charles semifinalists are:

Dominic Bertolini, son of Lawrence and Eileen Bertolini of Columbus. He is a member of St. Timothy parish and attended St. Timothy Grade School;

Jordan Feyko, son of James and Lori Feyko of Columbus. He is a member of St. Agatha parish and attended St. Agatha Grade School;

Cameron Houk, son of Allen and Christine Houk of Grove City. He is a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish and attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Grade School;

David Kenney, son of Dr. Brian and Teresa Kenney of Dublin. He is a member of St. Brigid of Kildare parish and attended St. Brigid of Kildare Grade School;

Andrew Krieger, son of Steven and Peggy Krieger of Lewis Center. He is a member of St. Paul parish and attended St. Paul Grade School;

Brian Merkle, son of Daniel and Diane Merkle of Columbus. he is a member of St. Andrew parish and attended St. Andrew Garde school;

Mark Stechschulte, son of Drs. Mark and Beth Stechschulte of Dublin. He is a member of St. Brendan parish and attended St. Brendan Grade School;

Christopher Steiner, son of Yaromir and Pat Steiner of New Albany. He is a member of Church of the Resurrection parish and attended New Albany Middle School;


21 are Commended Scholars

Twenty-one St. Charles seniors were named National Merit commended scholars for 2009-2010. They placed among the top 5% of the 1.5 million students who took the test. While they don’t continue in competition for National Merit scholarships, some are eligible for special scholarships sponsored by corporations
and businesses. These students include:

Corey Berta, son of Richard and Connie Brown of Canal Winchester. He is a member of St. Mary (Groveport) parish and attended Canal Winchester Middle School;

Jacob Burger, son of Corrine and Joseph Burger of Dublin. He is a member of St. Brigid of Kildare parish and attended St. Brigid of Kildare Grade School;

Alexander Coccia, son of Peter Coccia and Nena Couch of Columbus; He is a member of Immaculate Conception parish and attended Immaculate Conception Grade School;

Patrick Ellison, son of David and Debbie Ellison of Westerville. He attended Westerville’s Heritage Middle School;

Patrick Feeney , son of Michael and Bette Jo Feeney of Columbus. He is a member of St. Andrew parish and attended St. Andrew Grade School;

Robert Fields, son of Robert and Ingrid Fields of Dublin. He is a member of St. Brigid of Kildare parish and attended St. Brigid of Kildare Grade School;

Matthew Harbrecht, son of Dr. Jeffrey and Mary Harbrecht of Columbus. He is a member of St. Peter parish and attended St. Michael Grade School;

Andrew Kellogg, son of Timothy and Janet Kellogg of Columbus. He is a member of St. Agatha parish and attended St. Agatha Grade School;

Alexander McCorkle, son of Philip and Lisa McCorkle of Dublin. He is a member of St. Brigid of Kildare parish and attended St. Brigid of Kildare Grade School;

Timothy Meacham, son of Jeffrey and Kim Meacham of Columbus. He is a member of St. Agatha parish and attended St. Agatha Grade School;

Lucas Miller, son of Drs. Ken and Cheryl Miller of Westerville. He is a member of St. Paul parish and attended St. Paul Grade School;

Joseph Musto, son of Mrs. Lynne Musto of Powell. He is a member of St. Joan of Arc parish and attended St. Michael Grade School;

James Parker, son of Dr. Michael and Teresa Parker of New Albany. He is a member of St. Matthew parish and attended St. Matthew Grade School;

Connor Reider, son of Dr. Carson and Tierney Reider of Columbus. He is a member of St. Andrew parish and attended St. Andrew Grade School;

Connor Simpson, son of David and Ellen Simpson of London. He is a member of St. Patrick (London) parish and attended St. Patrick Grade School;

Vincent Spahr, son of Dennis and Kathy Spahr of Westerville. He is a member of St. Paul parish and attended Genoa Middle School;

Jordan Stumph, son of James and Shelli Stumph of Westerville. He is a member of St. Paul parish and attended St. Paul Grade School;

Joseph Sweeney, son of Dr. Thomas and Rose Sweeney of Columbus. He is a member of St. Agatha parish and attended Jones Middle School;

Charles Taylor, son of Charles and Barbara Taylor of Baltimore. He attended Lakeview Jr.High School;

Jack Toscano, son of Gary and June Toscano of Westerville. He is a member of St. Paul parish and attended Westerville’s Heritage Middle School;

Thomas Tyznik, son of Dr. John and Jude Tyznik of Gahanna. He is a member of St. Matthew parish and attended St. Matthew Grade School.

New Summer School Dates:Classes will be held Monday, June 14 through Friday, July 9. Phys-Ed will run Monday, June 14 through Friday, July 2.

Upcoming Alumni Activities

The St. Charles-Aquinas Golf Challenge at Riviera G.C.; August 12

Pass the word around: the fourth installment of the St. Charles Preparatory School & Aquinas College High School Golf Challenge will be held at Riviera C.C. in Dublin on Thurs., Aug.12.

Open to former students and alumni of both schools who graduated before 1965 (the year Aquinas closed it doors). St. Charles will host this year’s event, scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start. $70 will include golf w/cart, lunch, and soft drinks on the course. Guests are welcome to enjoy fellowship afterward: $12 includes the late lunch meal and camaraderie.

The format consists of foursomes of two-man teams playing a best-ball “Ryder Cup” style format.

All-Class Reunion Weekend
--Friday Night Stag Event;
Mass & Tour on Saturday


The 2010 Combined Class Reunion Celebration: Aug. 13
& 14 for the classes of 1960 (Golden), 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985 (Silver), 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005.

The All-Classes Stag “Beer-n-Brats” campus gathering from 6:00 - 11:00 p.m. on Friday night in/around the Robert C. Walter Student Commons; $13 will cover all food and drinks for the event; Class photos ($16) to be taken; “State of the School” update and campus tour to be provided.
On Saturday, August 14: Bike Ride at 9 a.m., Campus tour at 3 p.m. and an all-classes Mass in Mother of Mercy Chapel at 4:30 p.m. for alumni & spouses/guests.

In addition, classes have tentatively planned several individual class activities which will be fully explained and detailed in a June mailing:

The Class of 1960 will meet Saturday for Cocktails & Dinner following Mass at The Bexley Monk Restaurant starting at 6 p.m.

The Class of 1965 will meet Saturday at the home of classmate Jim Finn and hold its traditional Class Mass at 5:30 p.m.; Cocktails and Dinner will follow.

Note: Members of the classes of 1960 & 1965 are also encouraged to participate in the 2010 St. Charles Aquinas Golf Challenge on Thursday, Aug. 12 at Riviera Golf Club (Open to alumni up including the Class of 1965).

The Class of 1975 invites classmates to participate in the Saturday morning you are invited to participate in the 1st Annual Dick Ralston Memorial Golf Outing at Foxfire in Groveport. Registration starts at 7 a.m.; shotgun start at 8 a.m. Cost is $75 a person or $270 a foursome and includes a continental breakfast at the course. You are asked to contact Rick Ralston (rickralston@hotmail.com) or Ron Rau (rrau@sbcglobal.net) DIRECTLY to sign up, coordinate with fellow classmates, or get more information. After the All-Classes mass alumni and gusts will meet at Plank's cafe at 7 p.m. in the upstairs Room.

The Class of 1985 will meet Saturday for Cocktails and Dinner in the Faculty Lounge following Mass.

The Classes of 1970, 1980, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 currently have no other planned activities outside the Friday night All-Classes Stag “Beer-n-Brats” campus gathering and Saturday’s All-Classes Mass. Several classes are still considering informal dinners or evening gatherings Saturday night.
