For the first time in its 89-year history, St. Charles Preparatory School will expand its current Broad Street campus footprint. To be known as the “Robert D. Walter West Campus,” this project’s centerpiece will be the newly-purchased 6.2 acre site at the corner of Long St. and Nelson Rd., formerly the Dealers Lumber Co.
The project includes a new running track; synthetic turf practice field;, parking lot and weight-training facility; an additional 46-space parking area (The Horvath Parking Lot) on the west bank of Alum Creek; and an 180 ft.-long pedestrian bridge spanning Alum Creek to provide more convenient access between Main Campus and the new West Campus facilities.
Nick Savko and Sons, Inc. is serving as the major contractor on the project with major assistance from the Corna/Kokosing Construction Company.
As it stood the last week in February, the pedestrian bridge, Horvath Parking Lot have been in use since early November. The synthetic turf field was completed at the end of fall as was the base asphalt coat of the running track, which will be applied when warmer waether arrives thsi spring. The campus’ security fencing is 95% installed and its exterior parking lot is done.
The training facility’s exterior brickwork and roofing has been completed. Currently work crews are installing a decorative rail on top of/around the roof line, helping to hide the facility’s HVAC units. In the second week of January workers were applying foam insulation to the ceiling and the metal-stud framing and concrete block for what will become the coach’s offices, locker rooms, caretaker’s apartment and concession stand. Since then nearly all the interior drywall work has been finished.
