’Tis the Season for Graduations, Weddings and Awards!! Tell us about YOURS–and send a photo so we can share the news in the fall Cardinal alumni magazine

Or simply give us a general update (with a photo) about what you are up to these days!!!

With the summer upon us, work ratchets up on preparing the 2016 installment of the school’s alumni magazine. We invite and encourage alumni, parents and friends to e-mail Alumni Director Louis J. Fabro ’83 (lfabro@cdeducation.org) with photos and items about military deployments, a work promotion or recognition, career move or accomplishment, a wedding or the birth of a child, a well-earned retirement, a son’s first job out of college, a classmate’s recognition for service to his church and community…we want to hear about it and share it with everyone else!

Congratulations to the St. Charles Class of 2016!!

Congratulations to the school’s newest alumni!! On Friday, June 3rd, 141 seniors took part in the school’s 90th Commencement Exercises which included the Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation in the Robert C. Walter Student Commons.

Each year we publish in our “June” e-mail update, a list of the schools our graduates will be attending starting in the fall. In recent years, we have heard from alumni living in cities all across the USA (far from Central Ohio) that correspond to the location of these universities. They are excited to hear that fellow alumni are moving near them/their town. Many offer to reach out to these young men to provide them a special “Carolian” welcome and offer to help them acclimate to the area and learn its high points and attractions. I think BOTH the established alumnus and new college student benefit. If you are interested in assisting the transition of a student(s) moving near you, contact Louis J. Fabro (lfabro@cdeducation.org) and he can help facilitate that communication.

So without further ado, here are some FAST FACTS about our graduates and the schools they will be attending:

Cincinnati-area Alumni to gather with Principal Lower, School Reps July 24th at Reds vs. Diamondbacks game; Grads Gathered in Cleveland/Akron May 19th

Attendees representing eight decades of graduates were on hand at a Thursday night gathering on May19th at the Summit Mall’s Bravo! Cucina Italiana Restaurant in Fairlawn, Ohio. The St. Charles sponsored gathering of alumni living in the Cleveland and Akron areas attracted graduates that spanned the Class of 1953 through the Class of 2015. Principal Jim Lower provided a “State/Future of the School” presentation to the assembled group, which also included St. Charles Advisory Board members, teacher/coaches, and members of the school’s Development Office.

In addition to a wonderful selection of hours d’oeuvres, those on hand were treated to an extraordinary six-course menu specially created just for the evening by the restaurant’s executive chef. A very special “Thank-You!” goes out to 1985 graduate Mike Creedon, who as a District Partner with the Bravo Brio Restaurant Group, provided the location as well as the delicious food and spirits enjoyed by all.

Next month, St. Charles WILL ALSO HOST a gathering for alumni living in the Cincinnati area.

A group of school administrators, faculty/coaches, staff and Advisory Board members will travel to the Queen City to watch the Reds play the Arizona Diamondbacks. The fun takes place on Sunday, July 24th and the school has secured private use of the stadium’s “Machine Room Grill” with a great view of the stadium/field from inside behind the glass or from an exterior balcony. If you’d like to receive an invitation or more information regarding this Cincinnati gathering, you are invited to contact Development Officer Michael Welsch at mwelsch@cdeducation.org.

Loyal Carolians Helping Each Other / Focus On Networking Efforts Initiated by St. Charles Alumni Association

Especially trying to enlist those who graduated from St. Charles more than 25 years ago

We know that there is a true demand for networking opportunities for alumni. It is incumbent upon the school and the St. Charles Alumni Association to help create a way to enable our alumni to network with one another and foster the growth and development of both our younger alums and more ‘senior’ professionals. Therefore, if you haven’t already done so, please ask to join the school’s Carolian-only group on LinkedIn which currently totals 655+ members. Sorry ladies and non-graduates — this is exclusive to SC alums only. You can find the group at https://www.linkedin.com/groups/152022

We wish to make our LinkedIn alumni group the first destination where alumni participate in peer-to-peer advice and/or support our brothers who are seeking employment after college, searching for a new job opportunity or wanting to explore new careers.

My goal is to continually solicit BOTHopportunities” from members to share news of companies that are seeking qualified people to fill open positions and “requests” from alumni seeking career advice or looking for new challenges. I will ask that those “opportunities” and “requests” be sent to me via e-mail at lfabro@cdeducation.org.

Next month, on Friday, May 6th, and continuing each “First Friday” of the month, I will share the information received through our exclusive “St. Charles Preparatory School Alumni” group.

Limits to “bulk messaging” on LinkedIn led me to try to create 20 subsets of 50 alumni to communicate with directly each month. Frustratingly, this did not work out as hoped. So now I will have to reach you through a “general message” to keep this exclusive and private among Carolians. My hope is that by knowing the message will arrive regularly each “First Friday,” it will have less of a chance to disappear into a black hole with all the other “general messages” you receive on a daily basis on LinkedIn.

So, once again, please…

1) …join the EXCLUSIVE St. Charles Preparatory School Alumni group here on LinkedIn. I am the group’s administrator and will review all requests to join the group and only SC alums will be admitted.

2) …e-mail me at lfabro@cdeducation.org  with employment and career opportunities as well as requests for information and leads for internships, careers and  job opportunities.

Please help me to harness and leverage the well-known and proven work ethic, abilities and reputation the alumni of St. Charles Preparatory School have earned since our first graduation class in 1927!

Nota Bene: If you are an SC alumnus on LinkedIn, please include “St. Charles Preparatory School” in your profile’s Education section, proudly next to your college alma mater(s).

A very special “Thank-You!” goes out to 1985 graduate Mike Creedon, who as a District Partner with the Bravo/Brio Restaurant Group is providing the location, delicious food and spirits for all to enjoy.

Register for the 2016 Father/Son Mass & Breakfast on March 19th

Registration is underway for the 2016 St. Charles Father/Son Mass & Breakfast on Saturday, March 19th. This annual fraternal gathering, sponsored by St. Charles Alumni Association, continues to grow in popularity and drew over 300 dads and sons last year. It is a wonderful way for alumni fathers, uncles, and grandfathers to celebrate their St. Charles experience and introduce young sons and grandsons to the school! We ALSO invite and encourage current students, incoming freshmen and any other interested 6th, 7th or 8th graders, to attend, along with their fathers, grandfathers and uncles.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m. with Mass celebrated in Mother of Mercy Chapel followed by a complimentary buffet breakfast (prepared by Bosc + Brie) in the Robert C. Walter Student Commons. Hocking County Municipal Court Judge Fred Moses ’87 will serve as the gathering’s guest speaker. His law career has included work in more than 90 different courts and jurisdictions across Ohio. He’s practiced in federal, mayor’s, municipal and common pleas courts. Judge Moses, whose father, Bob, is a member of the St. Charles Class of 1959, lives in Laurelville with his wife, Molly, and their son, Nicholas (age 7).

The breakfast is free, but you are still asked to reserve your spot(s) to ensure there is plenty of food on hand for everyone. To sign up or for more information on this or any other alumni activity, please contact St. Charles alumni director Louis J. Fabro ’83 in the school’s Alumni and Development Office at lfabro@cdeducation.org.

Alumni Networking Initiative: Time to get “LinkedIn”!

Alumni Director building a LinkedIn Group exclusive to St. Charles Alumni for Networking & Sharing Career Advice

In each issue of the Cardinal Magazine, you proudly read stories about some of the countless alumni who have earned outstanding professional achievements throughout their careers. Graduating from St. Charles is no easy feat. With the knowledge, skills and work habits graduates leave SC possessing it is hardly a surprise how successful our alumni are in the professional world.

The Alumni Engagement Initiative was developed by Alumni Association President Sean Whalen ’99 and VP, Liam Gruzs ’01 and faculty member Dr. Jeff Pharion ’86 in partnership with Alumni Director Louis J. Fabro ’83. Its mission is to foster strong professional connections (1) between SC students and graduates and (2) Peer-to-Peer between Alumni.

We are proud to say that the first phase of this effort, led by Dr. Pharion, was to connect SC students with alumni and has been very successful. More than 200 alums have volunteered to be a resource to the students to help our young men prepare for life after St. Charles. The alumni have connected with the students on a variety of topics through talks hosted at the school. Alumni have also volunteered to be placed in a database of thsoe willing to offer guidance and referral for students who are looking for internships and employment opportunities later down the road.

The second phase of the alumni engagement initiative means to establish a more active role in helping to leverage the strength of the SC brotherhood. We want to assist alumni in advancing and establishing their professional careers across the city, state, country and world. We know that there is a true demand for networking opportunities for the alumni. It is incumbent upon us to find a way to enable our alumni to network with one another and foster the growth and develop of our both our younger alums and more ‘senior’ professionals. The internet provides a great tool for accomplishing this.

A Carolian-only group exists on the professional/career website of LinkedIn — exclusive for SC alums to connect with each other. It is our goal to make it the first destination where alumni participate in peer-to-peer advice and/or support our brothers who are seeking employment after college, searching for a new job opportunity or wanting to explore new careers.

So how can alumni (you) get involved? Click this link [ https://www.linkedin.com/groups/152022  ] to the exclusive St. Charles Preparatory School Alumni group on LinkedIn and request to join. The administrator of the group is Alumni Director Louis J. Fabro ’83 who will review all requests to join the group and only SC alums will be admitted. Our thanks to Jeff Carr ’93  who had the foresight to established the “St. Charles Preparatory School Alumni” group several years ago and has handed off the group’s management duties to the school.

Louis has recently been working diligently to establish personal “first connections” with as many alumni as he can identify on the LinkedIn site. [Note: If you are an SC alumnus on LinkedIn, please include “St. Charles Preparatory School” in your profile’s Education section, proudly next to your college alma mater(s).] In the coming week he’ll be reaching out to his connections, many of whom do not receive this monthly Update e-mail. The SC alums will receive an invitation to join the alumni group which currently totals 455—a number we hope to at least double in the coming two months with YOUR help!

Louis (still working to become more knowledgeable with all the “bells and whistles” of the LinkedIn site) will begin sending out a monthly message and seek feedback on how the effort is going, how he and other alumni can use the site more effectively… and of course to seek out success stories of peer-to-peer efforts to dispense advice and help folks secure employment.

If you have any questions about Alumni Engagement Initiative or the St. Charles Alumni Association, please contact Louis Fabro at lfabro@cdeducation.org.

Students, helping meet their responsibility of serving as “their brother’s keeper,” have been working to collect $30 each in pledges for completing the five-mile walk through Bexley. All money raised will assist qualified young men from financially challenged backgrounds to have a chance to receive a Saint Charles education.

If you would like to make a pledge/donation to this effort, please contact faculty member and Student Council moderator, John O’Neil, at jooneil@cdeducation.org.

— *Cincinnati-area Alumni to gather with Principal,School Reps 7/19 at Reds vs. Indians game; Grads Gathered in Cleveland/Akron May 2nd —

Attendees representing seven decades of graduates were on hand at a Saturday evening gathering on May 2nd at the Summit Mall’s Bravo! Cucina Italiana Restaurant in Fairlawn, Ohio. The St. Charles sponsored gathering of alumni living in the Cleveland and Akron areas attracted graduates that spanned the Class of 1952 through the Class of 2014.

*THIS SUMMER, St. Charles WILL ALSO HOST a gathering for alumni living in the Cincinnati area.

A group of school administrators, faculty/coaches, staff and Advisory Board members will travel to the Queen City to watch the Reds play the Cleveland Indians. The fun takes place on Sunday, July 19th and the school has secured (just like last year) private use of the PPG Paints Patio with its magnificent views of the stadium/field. If you’d like to receive an invitation or more information regarding this Cincinnati gathering, you are invited to contact Development Officer Michael Welsch at mwelsch@cdeducation.org.

— ’Tis the Season for Graduations, Weddings and Awards!! Tell us about YOURS–and send a photo– so we can share them in SC’s June Facebook Post: “What’s New(s) with St. Charles Alumni?” —

St. Charles alumni director Louis J. Fabro ’83 is looking for items to post in the “June” installment of “What’s New(s) with St. Charles Alumni?” on the St. Charles Facebook page. Visit the post at: https://www.facebook.com/stcharlespreparatoryschool

Our goal by adding this monthly post is to share fun, positive and inspiring alumni updates and photos in a more timely manner as “the Cardinal” alumni magazine is only published once a year. We’ll keep our eyes open here at school… but Louis invites and encourages alumni, parents and friends to e-mail him at lfabro@cdeducation.org with photos and items you learn about military deployments, a work promotion or recognition, career move or accomplishment, a wedding or the birth of a child, a well-earned retirement, a son’s first job out of college, a classmate’s recognition for service to his church and community…we want to hear about it and share it with everyone else!

So contact Louis and keep your eyes open for June’s “What’s New(s)…”
