Alumni & their families are specially-encouraged to register for Father/Son Mass & Breakfast on April 20; Expecting record crowd!

Registration continues through Thursday, April 18, for the 2013 St. Charles Father/Son Mass & Breakfast on Saturday, April 20.  A record number of people have already signed up (over 240!) for this event but we still have space for you and your son/father! So sign up today through SC alumni director Louis J. Fabro ’83 in the school’s Alumni and Development Office by e-mail at (new link address) lfabro@cdeducation.org  or by phone at 614-252-9288 at ext. 21. Don’t wait!

Sponsored by St. Charles Alumni Association, this event is a wonderful way for alumni fathers, uncles, and grandfathers to celebrate their St. Charles experience and introduce young sons and grandsons to the school!  In addition we also encourage current students, incoming freshmen and any other interested 6th, 7th, or 8th graders to attend along with their fathers, grandfathers and uncles.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m. with Mass celebrated in Mother of Mercy Chapel by St. Catharine Pastor and 1978 St. Charles alumnus, Fr. Mike Lumpe. The liturgy will be followed by a complimentary buffet breakfast (prepared by Mass Appeal Dining Services) in the Robert C. Walter Student Commons. There will also be a tour of our new Robert D. Walter West Campus athletic facilities to see the new track, field and the expansive and impressive training and fitness facility (weather permitting).

The breakfast is free, but you are still asked to reserve your spot(s) to ensure there is plenty of food on hand for everyone.

We are proud to announce that 1974 alumnus and Lifecare Alliance CEO, Chuck Gehring, will serve as the event’s guest speaker. Mr. Gehring has spent most of his professional career dedicated to serving the neediest and most vulnerable members of the Central Ohio community. His life-impacting work has not gone unnoticed by many in the Columbus philanthropic and business community. He received the Duncan Alumni Citizenship Award from The Ohio State University’s Fischer College of Business in September. This father of three alumni was a member of the St. Charles Advisory Board for 14 years (1994-2008).  In 2010, St. Charles acknowledged Mr. Gehring’s dedication to the St. Charles and Central Ohio communities by bestowing on him one of the school’s highest honors: The Borromean Medal for Service to St. Charles.

Besides his work at LifeCare Alliance, Mr. Gehring’s commitment to serving the community is also demonstrated through his involvement with numerous other groups. He is a member of the boards of directors for Ohio Dominican University and Mount Carmel Hospitals Foundation. He is a past chair of the United Way Professional Advisory Council and was previously the chair of the Advisory Board for the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging. Gehring is also the past board president of the Central Ohio Diabetes Association, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Financial Executives Institute and the St. Michael Athletic Association. Mr. Gehring and his wife, Kris, have been married for over

30 years and are members of Our Lady of Peace Parish. They have three sons, Chuck ’01, Joe ’03, and Bill ’08, and Abby, their daughter, is a 2006 graduate of St. Francis DeSales High School.

It’s time for the Spring Musical! The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

The St. Charles Drama Department is pleased to announce its spring musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Spelling Bee will be presented May 2-4 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 5 at 3:00 p.m. in the St. Charles Campus Theater. Adult Tickets are $10 and students, $5. For reservations, call the main office at 252-6714 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show’s Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. Six young people, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.

2013 Class Reunion Planning: Committee meeting being held next week

Alumni director Louis J. Fabro ’83 will be meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 in the Student Service Center’s 2nd floor Conference Room with members

of several reunion classes. He will be discussing the  coordination and  planning for the 2013 Combined Class Reunion Celebration which will take place  on September 6, 7

& 8, 2013 for the Classes of 1963 (Golden), 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988 (Silver), 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2008. Of special note: The Annual Alumni Golf Outing is being scheduled as part of the Weekend!

Tentative plans for the 2013 Summer Reunion Celebration include:

Friday night, September 6: The weekend’s Main Event: The All-Classes Stag “Beer-n-Brats” campus gathering from 6:00 – 11:00 p.m. in the Robert C. Walter Student Commons. As part of the festivities, attendees will also be provided tickets to that night’s Cardinal home football game at 7:30 p.m. against Eastmoor H.S, just a few feet away at Walt Plank Field. That evening class photos will be taken and principal Jim Lower will give a “State of the School” update.

Saturday, September 7: there will be a morning bike ride along the Alum Creek Bike Trail starting at 9:00 a.m., a campus tour from 3:00 – 4:15 p.m. and an All-Classes Mass in Mother of Mercy Chapel at 4:30 p.m. for alumni & spouses/guests.

Sunday, September 8: The annual Alumni Golf Outing has been moved from late September to the reunion weekend. The school will be hosting the event at Riviera C.C. in Dublin and it should run about $75 a player. This way golf is built into the weekend so that classes don’t need to worry about scheduling it on their own. This should benefit those who have to work Friday or don’t make it in from out of town until Friday night can participate. If a class wants to get together any other time … say to golf on Friday or Saturday morning and not participate in the alumni outing …that is perfectly fine, too!

Classes organize their own private activities around these collective events. This will allow several formal and informal opportunities to meet with your to reminisce about special teachers, deceased friends, and the athletic and academic challenges you overcame together as classmates.

Contact Louis at lfabro@cdeducation.org  to join your class’ reunion committee of to answer any questions you might have.

The New Robert D. Walter West Campus Initiative

Nick Savko & Sons, Inc. and Corna-Kokosing Construction have been working at a quick pace since late summer on the many elements of the Robert D. Walter West Campus initiative.

Exterior brickwork and structural changes are well underway on the future fitness and training center. Interior renovations will continue through the winter and into spring. Concrete curbs for the running track, its interior synthetic turf practice field and the campus’ parking lot are complete and workers have laid down the synthetic turf surface on the practice field. Workers are scheduled to put down the running track’s asphalt base – weather permitting – on Thursday or Friday.

Things are nearly complete along the west side of Alum Creek. The Horvath Parking Lot has been completed and Oakland Nursery has landscaped the area with mulch and planted numerous trees and bushes. The pedestrian bridge, set into place in August, will be ready for foot traffic in the coming week as the final sections of fencing are completed. A set of concrete stairs are now in place to provide access up the hill from the St. Charles parking lot to the bridge and adjacent bike trail.

2013 Reunion Planning Underway

In late October alumni director Louis J. Fabro ’83 will be sending survey letters to all those celebrating reunions this year. The 2013 Combined Class Reunion Celebration to be held September 6 &7, 2013 for the Classes of 1963 (Golden), 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988 (Silver), 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2008.

The role of the survey letter is to identify those who would like to volunteer to be a part of their reunion planning committee and which weekend activities they would like to see organized. Volunteers play a vital role in making the weekend event a success! Besides preparing a golf outing or formal dinner, volunteers help to directly contact classmates during the planning cycle. This personal classmate-to-classmate dynamic is THE KEY to a good turnout. If you have not received a survey letter and would like to volunteer your help please contact Louis by e-mail at lfabro@cdeducation.org  or by phone at 614-252-9288 ext. 21.

Louis will organize a general meeting for all class reunion organizational committee members in December.

Tentative Plans for the 2013 Summer Reunion Celebration include:

On Friday night, September 6, all classes are invited to the weekend’s Main Event: The All-Classes Stag “Beer-n-Brats” campus gathering from 6:00 – 11:00 p.m. in the Robert C. Walter Student Commons. As part of the festivities, attendees will also be provided tickets to that night’s Cardinal home football game at 7:30 p.m. against Eastmoor H.S, just a few feet away at Walt Plank Field. Earlier in the evening class photos will be taken and principal Jim Lower will give a “State of the School” update. On Saturday, September 7, there will be a morning bike ride along the Alum Creek Bike Trail, a campus tour from 3:00 – 4:15 p.m. and an All-Classes Mass in Mother of Mercy Chapel at 4:30 p.m. for alumni & spouses/guests.

2012-2013 Annual Fund Update

A heartfelt thank-you to all who have made a gift thus far and also to those who are considering Annual Fund support!

As reported on the St. Charles Facebook Page  “an ‘upstart’ student group, established just six months ago with less than a dozen members, ‘shot its way’ to notoriety by earning a spot in the FIRST World Championships that were held in St. Louis two weeks ago.

Visit http://www.facebook.com/stcharlespreparatoryschool  to see photo albums dedicated to the team and its performance in the Regional and World competitions.

Known as the “CardinalBots,” the St. Charles Robotic team earned their invitation with a strong performance in the Buckeye Regional March 22-24 at the Wolstein Center      on the campus of Cleveland State University. St. Charles took 5th overall at the competition which included more than 1,450 students from 59 teams representing four states and Canada. Out of eight other rookie teams, the Cardinals earned the “Rookie All-Star” award for its (and their robot’s) weekend performance and with it a merit-based championship bid.

At Championship, the “CardinalBots” had a fantastic finish –24th place in the ‘Curie Division’ that had 100 teams. The average length of experience for teams ranked #1 – #23 was 8.7 years. The Cardinalbots were only organized 6 months ago!!!At the event the team  record was 5-4-0 in the completion which featured robots that shot basketball into various hoops.

2011-2012 Annual Fund Update

According to 2011-2012 St. Charles Annual Fund chairman, Paul Heller ’82, and Parents Annual Fund co-chairs, Drs. Ken and Kathy Lutter, the school has received Annual Fund gifts and pledges valued at $1,978,246 through the end of December. We are grateful to these three fine people for helping St. Charles with its outreach for funding to help keep the traditions of SC alive and well, and our school moving forward.

This year’s Alumni Annual Fund is raising support for student financial aid and the ongoing effort of building the school’s endowments.

The Parents Annual Fund is raising support for the Robert D. Walter West Campus Initiative which will expand our current Broad Street campus footprint.
The centerpiece of this project is the Robert D. Walter West Campus, located on a school-purchased 6.2 acre site at the corner of Long St. and Nelson Rd., formerly the Dealers Lumber Co.  Work includes the construction of a new track, practice field, parking lot and weight-training facility. An additional 46-space parking area will be built on a parcel of donated land along the west bank of Alum Creek. To provide more convenient access between Main Campus and the new West Campus facilities, a 180 ft. long pedestrian bridge will be installed to span Alum Creek.

Paul, Ken and Kathy ask you to please consider a gift if you have yet to make one this year.  All forms of charitable support for St. Charles are deeply appreciated. Thanks to the gifts from our alumni and parents, both current and past, nearly one third of our student body receives nearly $1.1 million in financial aid.  The beautiful buildings and grounds campus-wide remain in tip-top shape thanks to Annual Fund support.  If you would like to begin supporting St. Charles or continue your support to SC by giving online, please direct your Web browserto our secure online giving page on the St. Charles Website: www.stcharlesprep.org
