Open House Nov. 6; Prospective 8th grade boys & their families welcome

St. Charles Preparatory School will hold its annual Open House for all 8th grade boys and their parents on Sunday, November 6, 2016. The main program will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the school’s Robert C. Walter Student Commons, at 2010 East Broad Street in Bexley. Afterward there will be an opportunity to speak with faculty members, coaches, students, alumni, and advisory board members. Please DON’T let tuition be a reason not to consider St. Charles for your son! The school is devoted to attracting boys from all economic and geographic backgrounds from Central Ohio. Ongoing support from St. Charles alumni and parents and the Central Ohio community has made it possible for the school to extend $1.47 million in financial aid and an additional $385,000 in academic scholarships to its students for this 2016-2017school year.

If you would like more information about the Open House, to have your name placed on our “prospective student” mailing/e-mail lists, you are invited to call the school’s Main Office at 614-252-6714.

Thanksgiving Mass & Distinguished Alumnus Awards on Nov. 22nd; Sullivan ’58, Vonau ’74 and Moses ’87 to be honored

We invite you to celebrate our school community’s Thanksgiving Mass on Tuesday, November 22nd at 8:40 a.m. in the Robert C. Walter Student Commons.

As always, the students, faculty and staff, parents, alumni and special guests will be on hand. The liturgy will be followed by the presentation of The Distinguished Alumnus Awards, established to recognize alumni who have honored St. Charles Preparatory School by their outstanding professional achievements, volunteer activities, and community-organization advocacy. These alumni have shared their affection for St. Charles Preparatory School and its community, and been shining examples of high moral and ethical standards.

St. Charles has specifically chosen the Mass of Thanksgiving as the forum at which to honor these men because it enables the school to publicly acknowledge their achievements and to present them as visible role models for our student body to emulate:

Michael M. Sullivan’58 – to acknowledge his highly-respected reputation and professional success through his work as principal of Sullivan and Associates, L.L.C; for his leadership and support of Jesuit institutions such as John Carroll University, Holy Rosary St. John’s parish; Christo Rey High School; St. Vincent de Paul; and of St. Andrew and St. Agatha parishes; and to show our sincere appreciation for his years of leadership, service and generosity on behalf of the school as member of the St. Charles Advisory Board.

James M. Vonau ’74 – to acknowledge his professional accomplishments in more than three decades in the legal profession, especially as a founding member of the law firm of Decker Vonau, LLC; for having earned the respect of colleagues and clients through his work with the Columbus Bar Association (as Chair of Probate Court Committee and Small Firm and Solo Practitioners Committee), the Ohio State Bar Association; the Columbus Estate Planning Council; and the Worthington Estate Planning Council; to honor his generous involvement in numerous organizations, both civic and Church-related, including Charity Newsies and the Knights of Columbus-Council 5801; and to recognize his service to the Diocese of Columbus as a trustee of The Catholic Foundation, of which he has been a member since 2007.

The Honorable Frederick T. Moses ’87 – to acknowledge his professional accomplishments, achieved in courts and jurisdictions all across the State of Ohio in the Federal, mayors, municipal and common pleas courts; with special appreciation and recognition of his work in establishing and administering the Vivitrol drug court program in Hocking County which has had life-changing and life-saving achievements and become a model for other courtrooms across the state and country.

Please join us afterward for a light breakfast reception in the Student Services Center’s Guidance Office to honor these three special alumni.

The noon luncheon was held in the Robert C. Walter Student Commons on the school’s campus. We expect more than 800 people to attend, representing business, civic, school, and church officials as well as the entire St. Charles student body, faculty and staff.

Ms. Eisenhower is the CEO and Chairman of The Eisenhower Group, Inc. (EGI) in Washington, D.C., that provides strategic counsel on business development, public affairs and communications projects. St. Charles gratefully acknowledges the efforts and generosity of the initiator and benefactor of the Borromean Lecture Series, Robert L. Dilenschneider ’61, and his staff, especially Joan Avagliano and Joe Pisani. We would also like to express our gratitude to the Susi Family, Berwick Manor Catering and its staff who prepare and serve the wonderful meal to all those in attendance. Who will be next year’s featured presenter? Stay tuned…

— “An Evening with Dick Vitale” in September a Huge Success —

St. Charles was proud to host one of college basketball’s top analyst, ambassadors and supporter of cancer research, Mr. Dick Vitale, to a day-long visit to the campus September 8th as part of the second installment of the “An Evening With…” community event.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Vitale met with the school’s 647 young men in the school gymnasium energizing them, as he did with the evening’s crowd of grown-ups, with his passion and enthusiasm. Mr. Vitale shared with the boys the same theme he touched on later that night: to always chase and never give up on your dreams, persevere when times get tough and to make good decisions. He said he can still hear his mother everyday saying to him: “Richie, don’t ever believe you ‘can’t’… don’t let ‘can’t’ be part of your life! You can be who you want to be. This is America!”

In the evening Dick appeared in the school’s Robert C. Walter Student Commons before more than 800 guests at a special dinner event that raised more than $625,000 for student financial aid. Several folks addressed the crowd, including Principal Jim Lower, St. Charles student Salvador Mercado and The Ohio State University’s Athletic Director, Gene Smith, who had the pleasure of introducing Mr. Vitale.

“An Evening With…” was initiated last year through the vision of 1963 alumnus Bob Walter. “Dick has been a national figure because of his love of basketball and his support of college athletics,” Bob said. “He has also been very supportive of the V Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer. When presented with the invitation to speak to the St. Charles community, Dick readily accepted; he is excited for the chance to share his passion for Catholic education and for making it available to those who are willing, but are in need of a helping hand. He truly understands the mission of St. Charles Preparatory School.”

The 2016-2017 St. Charles Annual Fund

This year’s Annual Fund goal is to raise $1.7 million from alumni, parents of current students and of alumni, and friends of St. Charles. The school is blessed this year with the leadership of Parents Fund Chairpersons Christopher and Karen Eramo and Alumni Fund chairman Alex Loehrer of the Class of 1994. Last year, St. Charles parents joined with the school’s alumni, past parents and friends to raise more than $2 million to provide scholarships for qualified students, funding for the school’s day-to-day operations, capital projects, faculty enrichment and retention programs.

Our goal for the 2016-2017 Parents Annual Fund is to raise $200,000 with a focus on the renovation of the school’s Campus Theater. This includes replacement of the building’s roof; refurbishing audience seating; installing new stage back drops and curtains; updating the lobby restrooms; repairing the plaster walls and ceiling; and finishing the Theater’s stage.

For a gift of $1,250, please consider “naming” one of the over 400 seats in the auditorium of the Theater Building.

Last year the Parents Phase helped make possible preserving the artistic features of the 78 year-old Mother of Mercy Chapel. This project included repairing the Chapel’s historically significant and inspiring stained glass windows and restoring its wooden pews, as well as the walls, floor and limestone columns.

There are 57 stained-glass windows that have been removed, re-leaded, and otherwise completely refurbished in order to gloriously tell their stories for another 80 years. For $4,000 per window, a limited-time offer exists to “name” one of these. It could be in honor or memory of someone, or remembering a special event that took place in the chapel.

Both of these offers are extended to the greater St. Charles community on a first-come-first-served basis.  Please e-mail Development Officer Michael Welsch at to initiate the process of securing and naming a window in the Chapel or a seat in the auditorium.

A heartfelt thank-you to all who have made a gift thus far and also to those who are considering Annual Fund support!  If you would like to make a gift online, please go to
