Msgr. Ralph J. Huntzinger, Class of 1942, served as principal of Saint Charles Preparatory School from 1969-1971. Before accepting the position of principal, Msgr. Huntzinger had been a dedicated faculty member and spiritual advisor for the school’s young men for13 years.
Msgr. Huntzinger grew up in St. Leo Parish and he attended grade school there. After completing his high school studies at St. Charles, he continued his studies at the College of St. Charles Borromeo where he earned a degree in philosophy. Msgr. Huntzinger completed his theological studies at Mount St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati and was ordained to the priesthood on March 18, 1950.
His first priestly assignment was as assistant pastor in Blessed Sacrament Parish (1950-1954) in Newark and as a teacher at the former Newark St. Francis de Sales High School. After spending one year at St. Christopher Parish as an assistant, Monsignor returned to St. Charles as a teacher in 1956 and remained there until 1971, except for a brief period during which he was assigned to St. Nicholas Parish and taught at Bishop Rosecrans High School in Zanesville.
During his St. Charles years, Msgr. Huntzinger served as director of the high school resident department and taught English. During this time he was also pursuing a Master’s degree in English at The Ohio State University. While he was serving as principal of St. Charles, Msgr. Huntzinger was assigned to the Pontifical College Josephinum as spiritual director.
After his years at St. Charles, Msgr. Huntzinger was appointed the first director of the diaconate program for the Diocese of Columbus. He returned to full time parish ministry in 1979 when he became pastor of St. Mary Parish in German Village where he remained for 15 years. Although he is now retired, Monsignor now assists at St. Pius the X Parish in Reynoldsburg.
