St. Charles DI State Golf Champions!!

The St. Charles varsity golf team, after playing throughout the year at an elite level, won the Division I boys state golf tournament on Saturday October 24 at The Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course. It is the first ever title for the school's golf program.

The historic victory came in dramatic fashion, with the team surging from behind on the final few holes to shoot a 309 and edging out Cincinnati St. Xavier (313), Cleveland St. Ignatius (315) and Columbus’ Dublin Coffman (322).

The tournament had been reduced to an 18-hole shoot-out when inclement weather washed out the tournament’s first round. After none of its players shot better than a 40 on the first nine holes, all five Cardinals made a collective charge on the back side, shooting 1 under par in the final six holes, for the victory.

Nate Yankovich ’12 earned medalist runner-up and 1st Team All-Ohio honors at 75 (35 on the back nine). Alex Carpenter ’11 matched Nate’s 35 on the back nine for a 76 and tying for the sixth-best individual score and 2nd Team All-Ohio distinction. They were followed by Andrew Steffensmeier ’10 (79), Michael Ricaurte ’11 (79) and Daniel Wiegandt ’11 (82).

The Cardinals placed first in seven regular-season invitationals and second in another three (once losing to Jerome by a shot and twice to St. Ignatius by one and four shots, respectively.). They also went undefeated in the Central Catholic League.

“I'm just so proud of these guys because they're a group of guys who were committed to a goal," said Cardinals head coach Anthony Mampieri (St. Charles Class of 1993). "I told them that I thought they had what it takes to win a state championship. We were ready to go."

Supporting the legacy and memory of Monsignor Thomas M. Bennett (1931-2008)

The Monsignor Thomas M. Bennett Commemorative Issue of the Cardinal, the school’s alumni magazine, was recently mailed to members of the St. Charles community. It shares memories of “Father” Bennett, a good friend and mentor, who passed away in September after devoting more than 50 years of his life to the Catholic priesthood and the students of St. Charles.

For those who did not have the good fortune of being personally acquainted with this unique man, we hope that this issue will help you understand the reasons why we hold him in high esteem.

the Cardinal magazine is being accompanied by a special letter from St. Charles Advisory Board chairman, Robert W. Horner III ’79, and a gift envelope which encourages alumni and friends to help in building The Thomas M. Bennett Scholarship Fund.

You are invited to make contributions simply by clicking on a secure online donation page devoted to Father:
https://www.stcharlesprep.org/01_support/gift_online_mtb.php

Consistent with Father’s wishes, all donors who provide a gift of $150 or more to the Bennett Fund will receive a book from Father’s personal library. A special envelope was enclosed copy of the Cardinal, but you may also make a contribution by mailing your gift for the Bennett Fund, the Annual Fund and/or any other St. Charles fund to the school.

"The proceeds from this fund are used to help provide a St. Charles education to young men in financial need, “ he writes. “Many of the gifted students who pass through the doors of
St. Charles could not otherwise do so without the financial assistance that the school provides. By helping to support the Bennett Fund, you assist future generations of St. Charles students, and in doing so you honor and preserve Father Bennett’s legacy of service,” Horner says.

“Our love of Father Bennett was exceeded only by his love of
St. Charles and of us. He lived a life of selfless Christian service and urged us to do the same," Bob continued.

"He made it clear, in word and deed, that real success was measured only by how effectively we employ our talents in the service of others. Please accept my thanks and that of the school’s Advisory Board, faculty, staff and students for your continued generous support."

Please do not hesitate to contact the school's Development Director, Mike Duffy, by phone at 614-252-9288 (ext. 20) or e-mail at miduffy@cdeducation.org if you have any questions about making gifts to St. Charles.
