The New Robert D. Walter West Campus Initiative

For the first time in its 89-year history, St. Charles Preparatory School will be expanding its current Broad Street campus footprint. To be known as the "Robert D. Walter West Campus," this project's centerpiece will be the newly-purchased 6.2 acre site at the corner of Long St. and Nelson Rd., formerly the Dealers Lumber Co.

Visit http://www.facebook.com/stcharlespreparatoryschool to follow the project which
includes a new running track, practice field, parking lot and weight-training facility. An additional 46-space parking area will be built on a parcel of donated land along the west bank of Alum Creek. And an 180 ft. long pedestrian bridge will be installed to span Alum Creek to provide more convenient access between Main Campus and the new West Campus facilities.

Basketball Great Marquis Miller ’77 has Jersey retired;
visit our Facebook page for photos and more at: http://www.facebook.com/stcharlespreparatoryschool

St. Charles Preparatory School on Friday, January 27 retired the “#45” jersey worn by former all-state basketball standout, Marquis D. Miller ’77 during halftime of the Cardinal’s . home varsity basketball win over CCL foe St. Francis DeSales. Marquis is one of the most celebrated basketball players in the school’s history. No other Cardinal varsity basketball jersey has sported the number “45” since Marquis graduated. Marquis has remained in close touch with the school and served his alma mater as a member of the St. Charles Advisory Board for 11 years (1985-1996).

High School and College Basketball Career: In high school Marquis moved up to the varsity team at the end of his freshman year and helped lead the Cardinals to three consecutive Central Catholic League Championships (1975-1977) and their first District Championship (1976). The two-time first-team All-Ohio player (Class AA, 1976 & 1977) was voted Ohio’s “Player of the Year” his senior season.

Marquis earned a scholarship to The Ohio State University where he played for Eldon Miller on standout teams that included Herb Williams, Clark Kellogg and Kelvin Ransey. The Buckeyes made it to the NCAA tournament’s “Elite Eight” in Marquis’ junior season (1980), and with his basketball career was hampered by injuries, and has gone on to  a highly successful career in development.

Supporting Minority Student Recruitment, Inclusion and Retention: The
Friday night ceremony was headed by “My Brother’s Keeper,” a minority student organization at St. Charles that is focused on increasing minority student enrollment through recruitment, inclusion and retention programs. MBK not only seeks to honor one of the school’s “favorite sons,” but also to shine a spotlight on its efforts to attract both minority students and scholarship funds—a cause championed throughout Miller’s professional life.

Marquis, who attended St. Thomas grade school on Columbus’ east side, is currently the vice president of field operations for the National Minority Supplier Development Council in New York. Donations in Marquis’ honor can be made at https://www.stcharlesprep.org/01_support/gift_online_sc.php -- the St. Charles secure online gift page. They can also be mailed to the attention of the school’s Development Office (2010 E. Broad St., Columbus, Ohio 43219-1665).

Six Honored For Exceptional Achievement & Service

To see photos of the honorees, we invite you to visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/stcharlespreparatoryschool?sk=wall

On Friday, November 4, the entire school body and members of the
St. Charles community joined to celebrate the Feast Day of its patron, Charles Borromeo, as well as to acknowledge the achievements and service of four special individuals. The liturgy was celebrated by Bishop Frederick Campbell and was held in the school’s beautiful Robert C. Walter Student Commons. A reception followed afterward in the Campus Theatre’s Cavello Center. The honors were handed out by principal Dominic J. Cavello ’64 and St. Charles Advisory Board chairman, Timothy M. Kelley ’76. Those recognized were:

Dr. Tedd Ellerbrock, a graduate of the Class of 1964, was awarded The Borromean Award for Outstanding Achievement. Unfortunately he was unable to accept the award in person as he was working in Uganda at the time on special assignment with the U.S. State Dept. In 2008, he received the United States Public Health Service’s Distinguished Service Medal in recognition of his exceptional scientific and public health achievements in fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S. and abroad. Since 1986, he has been a medical epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since 2003, he has been the Team Lead for Adult HIV Treatment in the Division of Global HIV/AIDS at CDC and, since 2005, the Co-Chair of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Adult Treatment Technical Workgroup at the U.S. State Department. As one of the few obstetrician-gynecologists specializing in HIV/AIDS, from 1988-2002, Ellerbrock led some of the country’s first investigations to define the impact of HIV infection on women in the U.S. and co-authored some of the first publications about the epidemiology of women with AIDS in the U.S. In 2003, PEPFAR was launched to combat global HIV. The initial, 5-year, $18 billion program was the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease in history. Since 2004, Dr. Ellerbrock has provided leadership and oversight of the PEPFAR Track 1.0 Treatment Program, which has helped to initiate life-saving antiretroviral therapy (ART) on 1.4 million persons at more than 1,300 medical facilities in 13 countries. As Co-Chair of the Adult Treatment Workgroup, he has helped to establish standards, improve policies and practices, and evaluate operations and outcomes of HIV treatment programs that currently support ART for 3.8 million persons worldwide. His hands-on, problem-solving approach contributed substantially to the initiation and early success of the program.

John (Class of 1978) and Linda Mackessy received The Borromean Medal for Distinguished Service for their long-time support and commitment to the St. Charles community. They have generously honored the memory of former faculty member Monsignor F. Thomas Gallen (“Monz”) through his endowment fund as well as their patronage of his Music Room; and served two highly-successful years as chairs for Parent’s Annual Fund; and for their years of involvement in support of so many parents’ and alumni activities.

The Principal’s Award for Leadership and Service to St. Charles was presented to William “Bill” Riat to acknowledge his counsel and leadership on every major transformative design and construction project that the school has successfully completed over the last decade including the school’s front entry and courtyard (2002-03); the Robert C. Walter Student Commons and the Student Services and Fine Arts Center (2003-05); Walt Plank Field (2006-07); and currently, the new Robert D. Walter West Campus, where he worked to contract the land’s sale, with engineers and attorneys on detailed zoning issues; and towards the final construction phase.

A little more than two weeks later, on Tuesday, November 22, the Cardinal community drew together again to celebrate Mass and honor two very special alumni in the Walter Student Commons. A reception followed afterward in the St. Charles Student Service Center. The honors were handed out by assistant principal Jim Lower and St. Charles Advisory Board vice-chairman, Paul G. Heller ’82. Those recognized were:

Dr. Dennis Durbin, Class of 1979, was awarded the St. Charles Distinguished Alumnus Award. He is a pediatric emergency physician and clinical epidemiologist; a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; and an internationally recognized leader in pediatric trauma research. Dr. Durbin is the co-scientific director of the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Durbin’s research interests are in the area of epidemiology and pediatric injury, with a particular emphasis on the prevention of motor vehicle occupant injuries to children and the prevention of teen driver crashes. His devoted service as his brother and sister’s keeper has helped preserve the priceless lives of so many children.

Doctor Michael Oddi, Class of 1965, was also awarded the St. Charles Distinguished Alumnus Award. He is a practicing vascular surgeon who has given more than 40 years of service to America, its citizens and his fellow soldiers and comrades as a member of the United States Army. Doctor Oddi’s active duty service included his leadership as
a commander and surgeon with the 848th Forward Surgical Team during his two tours of duty in Iraq. He has honorably displayed a selflessness that he once spoke about in others---the soldier’s spirit of bravery, commitment, and brotherhood--manifested in his life-saving work even with the possibility of losing his own life.

The school's two-time defending Division III National Champion Engineering “Team A” has THREE-PEATED—missing out on recording the highest score in this year’s national competition by just a single point!

“Team A’s” outstanding score in the Jets TEAM+S Engineering competition in February also earned it the designation as overall Ohio State Champion.

All six teams traveled to Ohio Northern University for a regional competition against nearly 1,200 teams that competed across the nation at remote and regional sites in 47 states.

The JV team earned national champion runners-up status by scoring 2nd in the nation for JV Division III. Four earn AP’s highest “National” distinction; Additional 43 alumni, 15 seniors earn recognition

Sixty-two current and former St. Charles students were recognized by the College Board for outstanding achievements
on their 2010 Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams.

Four of these young men received the highest honor for their exceptional results.

This international program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP exams- at most U.S. colleges and universities. Only about 18 percent of the 1.8 million high school students who participated performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition in the AP Scholar program.

The four (4) students, now alumni, who performed at the very highest level were named “National AP Scholars.” They earned
an average score of at least 4 or higher on eight or more exams. Their names and the schools they now attend are: Alexander Coccia ’10 (University of Notre Dame), Jordan Feyko ’10 (Harvard University), Christopher Steiner ’10 (University of Notre Dame) and Charles Taylor ’10 (University of Michigan).

Nineteen (19) former St. Charles students qualified at the next-highest level, “AP Scholar with Distinction,” by scoring an average of 3.5 or higher on all AP exams taken and a grade of 3.0 or higher on five or more of those exams. Their names and the schools they now attend are: Robert Cannell ’10 (Vanderbilt University), Kevin Colvin ’10 (University of Notre Dame), Patrick Feeney ’10 (The Ohio State University), Cameron Houk ’10 (University of Notre Dame), Christian Jeric ’10 (University of Toledo), Andrew Kellogg ’10 (Ohio University), Andrew Krieger ’10 (Rose Hulman Institute of Technology), Jacob LaFleur ’10 (Case Western Reserve), Brian Lewis ’10 (University of Dayton), John Mackessy ’10 (Williams College), Brian Merkle ’10 (Northwestern University), Casey Morris ’10 (University of Notre Dame), Joseph Musto ’10 (Purdue University), Connor Reider ’10 ( University of Notre Dame), Vincent Spahr ’10 (University of Dayton), Mark Stechschulte ’10 (University of Notre Dame), Jordan Stumph ’10 (University of Notre Dame), Nicholas Summers ’10 (Holy Cross University) and Jack Toscano ’10 (University of Notre Dame).

Sixteen (16) young men were designated as “AP Scholars with Honor” for averaging at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3.0 or higher on four or more of those exams. Nine of these are 2010 alumni (with their current schools noted) and the others will graduate this June. They are: Brandon Bowman ’10 (Clemson University), Jacob Burger ’10 (University of Notre Dame), Robert DeJaco ’10 (University of Kentucky), Matthew Harbrecht ’10 (University of Notre Dame), David Kenney ’10 (University of Notre Dame), Patrick McAllister ’10 (The Ohio State University), Alexander McCorkle ’10 (Miami University, Ohio), Timothy Meacham ’10 (Georgetown University), Andrew Steffensmeier ’10 (University of Dayton), Alexander Dang ’11, Evan Doney ’11, J. Griffin Fillman ’11, John Flis ’11, Eric Niemeyer ’11, John Parent ’11 and Christopher Quinn ’11.

Twenty-three (23) have been named “AP Scholars” for test averages of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. Fifteen of these are 2010 alumni (with their current schools noted) and the others will graduate this June: Dominic Bertolini ’10 (The Ohio State University), Samuel Binnig ’10 (Ohio University), Michael Carone ’10 (University of Cincinnati), Michael Cianflona ’10
(The Ohio State University), Seth Harnett ’10 (The Ohio State University), Taylor Kern ’10 (Kettering University), Matthew
Larkin ’10
(University of Alabama), Daniel Latz ’10 (University of Cincinnati), Connor Lenhart ’10 ( The Ohio State University), Michael Marino ’10 (University of Cincinnati), Christopher Meleca ’10 (The Ohio State University), James Parker ’10 (Miami University, Ohio), Benjamin Price ’10 ( University of Dayton), Connor Simpson ’10 (Kent State University), Joseph Sweeney ’10 (Fordham University), Coleman Hessler ’11, Andrew Hof ’11, Seth Keller ’11, Weston Niermeyer ’11, Samuel Powell ’11, Joseph Spahr ’11, Osaze Udeagbala ’11, and Daniel Weigandt ’11.

The College Board notes that the AP program provides more than 30 different college-level courses and exams. These provide willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and standout in the college admission process. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation's leading liberal arts and research institutions.

More than 3,800 colleges and universities annually receive AP scores. Most four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or advanced placement for qualifying exam scores. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and have higher college graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.

Our congratulations to its editor-in-chief, Alex Coccia '10, for
earning
The Glenna R. Joyce Scholarship to the University
of Notre Dame!

Since its first graduating class in 1927, St. Charles has nurtured the minds and hearts of scholars, priests, entrepreneurs, artists, executive officers, doctors, legal professionals, and Church and community leaders. As the 144 members of the Class of 2010 walk the hallowed halls of St. Charles for the final time as students we know they leave having learned the value of education, the critical importance off religion and faith, the call
to help others, and the need to adhere to high ethical standards.
Congratulations Loyal Carolians!

A look back on some of the outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments of SC students:

Academic Highlights for 2009-2010:

Engineering Team Defends National Championship
Columbus St. Charles Preparatory School has repeated as Division III National Champions in the prestigious Jets Test of Engineering and Aptitude, Mathematics plus Science (TEAMS) competition. Another one of its teams finished as National Runners-Up and a third finished Fifth. In 2008-2009 the varsity “A” team placed 1st in its division; the varsity “B” team 32nd; the varsity “C” team 18th; and the junior varsity 5th in the national division rankings. This year St. Charles was one of only two schools nationally to qualify three teams in the top five of their division.

Seniors Earn 'Most Prestigious Recognition' Consideration
Jordan Feyko '10 and Andrew Krieger '10 were selected as two
of only 3,000 semifinalists for the prestigious 2010 Presidential Scholars Program. They were selected from nearly 3.2 million high school students expected to graduate in 2010. Feyko has since been named as one of only 560 finalists. Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest honors bestowed on graduating high school seniors.

Ohio Graduation Test: 100% Pass Rate Continues
For the sixth straight year - as many years as the test has been administered - St. Charles sophomores scored a perfect 100% pass rate on the Ohio Graduation Test.

Significant National Merit Recognition
Eight seniors were named National Merit Finalists while an additional 21 were recognized as Commended Scholars for 2009-2010. Another student was recognized as a National Merit Achievement Scholar.

“In-The-Know” Team Champions Again
In February the St. Charles In-The-Know Team claimed its second consecutive championship in the WOSU-TV quiz-show tournament, the school’s 7th overall tournament championship.

Winter: The St. Charles Swim team won its fifth consecutive Division I district championship before going on to finish fourth in the state meet held at Branin Natatorium in Canton. In the previous four years the team captured a state championship (2008) and finished as state-runners-up in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
