Miller ’77 Headlines 13th Annual Father/Son Mass and Breakfast

The sun shone brightly on the 13th Annual Father/Son Mass and Breakfast on Saturday morning. The event welcomed 9th graders, prospective 5th-8th grade boys, alumni, and their fathers/sons.  Fr. Charles Shonk, OP ’99 and Deacon Marion Smithberger ’72, led the celebration of the Eucharist in Mother of Mercy Chapel which was filled by more than 220 attendees. Our thanks also to our organist, Aldriel Barnum ’13, who filled the Chapel with wonderful music.

A buffet breakfast catered by The Berwick  followed in the Robert C. Walter Student Commons. The school was honored to welcome back to campus our keynote speaker, 1977 alumnus, Marquis Miller. He is the City of Chicago’s first Chief Diversity Officer responsible for developing and implementing the City’s policies and strategies for recruiting and maintaining a workforce that reflects the diversity of Chicago’s population.  Marquis is an emeritus member of the St. Charles Advisory Board and the 2014 recipient of the school’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Principal James Lower welcomed everyone to the event and introduced Miller ’77, who spoke on the value of a Catholic education. Marquis shared with the fathers and sons in the audience the great value his parents and grandparents placed on it. He told of their hard work and the great sacrifices they made  in order to make such an education possible for their children.

Thank you, Marquis, for being a great role model for our community, especially our students!
