Aquinas Alumni Association

St. Charles was honored to host graduates of Aquinas College High School for lunch today in the school’s Walter Student Commons.

Longtime Aquinas’s Alumni Association President Lou Nobile (AQ ’57) has worked each year with his SC counterpart, Louis J. Fabro ’83, to put on this event which goes back nine years.

More than 70 Aquinas grads attended. They were joined by St. Charles staff and administrators as well as 11 students receiving scholarships this year through two endowment funds set up years ago through the generosity of Aquinas alumni and friends. Special prayers were said for sick alumni and family members, as well as those who had died, especially since the last meeting in May. St. Charles Principal Jim Lower spoke to the group about the strong state of Catholic education in the diocese.

Aquinas College High School was an all-boys high school operated by
the Dominican Fathers from 1905 to 1965 under the watchful eyes of
Father John Smith OP, the legendary Aquinas teacher and disciplinarian who served as the school’s “Dean of Discipline” for 32 years (1932-1965).  He turned down the offer to become “President” several times.

Both St. Charles and Aquinas have long traditions and many Columbus families have graduates from both schools. Since Aquinas closed its
doors in 1965, many of its graduates have had sons, grandsons and
nephews attend St. Charles.

The alumni associations of both schools have worked to help foster
a growing respect and friendship between graduates of these once
VERY competitive rival schools. As the number of years since the closing of the Dominican-run school tallies higher, the numbers of Aquinas alumni sadly move in the opposite direction.

Graduates of Aquinas have a very stirring saying: “As long as we are,
Aquinas will be.” But rest assured, “As Long as there is St. Charles, Aquinas will be!” We look forward to many, many more years of camaraderie with our Aquinas “brothers.”

St. Charles Preparatory School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities made available to students at the school.
