  • Joe Mazzulla

Joe Mazzulla has quickly established himself as a top-tier NBA coach, leading the Boston Celtics to the 2024 NBA Championship with an impressive 16-3 postseason record. Mazzulla compiled an outstanding regular-season record of 121-43 and at just 35 years old, he is the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since Bill Russell did so in 1969 as a player-coach.

A former West Virginia University standout and Big East Academic All-Star, off the court Mazzulla began his journey back to his Catholic faith while in college as he worked through injury and personal challenges.

Since becoming head coach of the Celtics, he is widely known for his strong devotion to his Catholic faith, seeking God's guidance in his coaching decisions. He practices "prayer walks” around the TD Garden before games, often reciting the rosary and reflecting on his faith, which he believes is a part of his core identity that serves as an anchor guiding him throughout his life and career.

His rapid rise in the coaching ranks and his success in Boston solidify him as one of the most promising coaches in professional basketball today, while his commitment to his Catholic faith serves to uplift and inspire those seeking a stronger relationship with God.

  • How An Evening With... Was Born

Through the vision of 1963 alumnus Bob Walter and his wife, Peggy, St. Charles Preparatory School introduced “An Evening With…”create an annual event that featured intriguing speakers and offered insight into various thought-provoking topic in 2015. The goal of “An Evening With…” was twofold.  One, to create an annual event series that featured intriguing speakers and offered insight into various thought-provoking topics, and two, to raise funds that would provide tuition assistance to St. Charles families in need.

The inaugural speaker was Wall Street icon, Peter Lynch. Since then, the event has welcomed distinguished presenters such as the enthusiastic basketball broadcaster, Dick Vitale; military hero and patriot, Major Dan Rooney; U.S. Army veteran, CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation and Governor, Wes Moore; former football star and Christian missionary, Tim Tebow; Nicholas James Vujicic, a motivational speaker who was born with a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs; Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, Founder and CEO of Mary’s Meals, an organization that provides life-changing meals to some of the world’s poorest children; and most recently, His Eminence Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who currently serves as a member of the Dicastery for the Oriental Churches and the Dicastery for Evangelization and participated in the Conclave that elected Pope Francis in March 2013.

Since 2015, we have raised millions, allowing us to provide tuition assistance to more young men who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend St. Charles.
Sponsorships for “An Evening With...” can be directed to the St. Charles Endowment or can be used to start your own named endowment fund.
