Soccer Team Loses in 2OT in DI State Soccer Finals

Louis Fabro
Congratulations to the St. Charles Soccer Team which played for the Division I state soccer championship on November 10 at Historic Crew Stadium. The Cardinals (13-4-4) lost 1-0 in double overtime to Cleveland St. Ignatius (16-4-2), the now six-time defending state champion.

The 4th seeded Cardinals defeated Olentangy Berlin (2-1) in the district finals, Springboro (3-1) in the reginal semifinals, and Pickerington North (1-0) 0) to earn a state berth.  St. Charles then dispatched previously undefeated Archbishop Moeller on penalty kicks (4-3) to reach the finals.
St. Charles asked for and was granted permission to compete in Division I this season after originally being assigned to Division II as part of the OHSAA’s tournament expansion. St. Charles advanced to the state semifinals last year.

“We belong in Division I with our talent level and our pedigree of success,” St. Charles boys soccer coach Chris Vonau said. “I want to play the best teams in the state come tournament time and so do my players. They were ecstatic that OHSAA approved our application to move up. When I learned that the OHSAA was changing the divisional assignments by adding more divisions for soccer, I immediately began lobbying for an exception process to permit programs like ours to move up.”

Now you know why St. Charles is such a respected institution in academics and athletics.  Building Better Men!
