Water Polo Team Wins 9th State Championship

The St. Charles Water Polo Team repeated as Division I State Champions, defeating Upper Arington 17-8 in the tournament finals, held October 25 at Cincinnati Sycamore HS.

The Cardinals pulled out to an early advantage over the Bears and led throughout the rest of the contest to win the program’s ninth state championship. St. Charles edged out Thomas Worthington 11-9 to make the finals while UA, who the Cardinals defeated in last year’s state finals, defeated Cincinnati St. Xavier in the other semifinal contest.

Pierce Bateman ‘26, who scored six of the team’s goals in the semifinal match, teamed up with Austin Carpenter ‘26 to lead the Cardinals in scoring in the finals with four goals each. Dylan Rohyans ‘27 (three goals), Caleb Moore ‘27 (2), Gabe Nixon ‘26 (2), Alex Wu ‘26 (1) and Brendan Williams ‘27 (1) accounted for the others.
 
Bateman was named “Ohio Player of the Year” and 1st Team All-Ohio. Several other Cardinals also earned special honors: Nixon was named to the All-Ohio 2nd Team; Williams, All-Ohio Honorable Mention; and Carpenter, All-Ohio 3rd Team.

“All American” honors have not been announced yet for this season.
