St. Charles Emerges as Team to Beat

Having reached a state semifinal in 2024 and losing a regional semifinal in five overtimes last season, St. Charles is used to being among the top teams in central Ohio.

The Cardinals (18-3-1) have been the best team this winter, having already clinched the CHC-Red title. St. Charles is 13-1 in the CHC with 26 points, well ahead of second-place Upper Arlington (17 points, 8-4-0-1).
St. Charles has league games remaining against Cincinnati Moeller on Jan. 23 and 24.

“My challenge and the coaches’ challenge is to make sure we’re not resting on those laurels,” coach Danny Greiner said. “We clicked a box, we’ve achieved one of our goals, but we still have to build and have our eyes on the CBJ Cup and the state championship. The season’s not over just because we’ve clinched the division.”

The Cardinals lost to Hunting Valley University School 6-0 in a 2024 state semifinal. They fell to eventual state champion UA 2-1 in five OTs in a regional semifinal last year.

Junior forward Will Howard leads the team in scoring with 13 goals and 19 assists for 32 points, followed by sophomore forward Jack Jensen (8-17-25), senior defenseman Tommy Scharfenberger (10-14-24) and junior forward Gabe Sotak (5-18-23).

Senior Dylan Fansler and junior Dylan Bell have split time in goal. Bell is 9-0-1 with a 1.14 goals-against average and .952 save percentage, and Fansler is 8-3 with a 2.0 goals-against average and .929 save percentage.
